Variscite is hydrated aluminum phosphate (AlPO4.2H20). Since it's structure
involves water, its color can change with dehydration and heat. It's also porous
so oils will also affect the color. It has been used as a replacement for
turquoise. It has been found in central Europe. Significant quantities have been
found in North America in the Nevada - Utah area. Variscite gets it's name from
Variscia, an old district in Germany where it was first found.
