It has been an honor to Chair the Big Bend Gem & Mineral Show
again this year, a fund raising event for the Chihuahuan Desert Gem And
Mineral Club. I am proud to say it was a success, and the show will
continue to its 20th year. Vicente Guevara of Marfa won the Grand Prize
drawing of an LED Calcite lamp donated by Ron and Jennifer Guzman of
FluorEssence.
This year, the dealer appreciation dinner was pot luck, thank you all
who helped to make this an awesome welcome to the wary travelers.
I wish to thank the Marfa Chamber of Commerce for advertising
support to the Big Bend Gem Show the past three years, and to all the
local's who came and enjoyed. I hope the rotation of this trade show in
the Big Bend area makes more people aware of the potential for this
hobby as an economic resource. West Texas has some of the most
unique agate in the world, and it could be a bigger attraction for tourism
if more land was open to collectors. If just a few ranches in this area
allowed a Gem or Geology Club to offer guided field trips to the public
once or twice a year, a show like this could add to the Big Bend
economy for a very long time.
Thank you,
Paul Graybeal
Club President
